Union Terrace Gardens hosted Aberdeen’s National Playday celebration, and squeals of laughter and excitement abounded in the sunken gardens a stone’s throw from busy shoppers.
Jennifer Brownlie, Play Ranger for Aberdeen Play Forum said “There has been a really positive response from parents this year. We have built on the success of last year’s event, over 200 children have attended today, most with their parents or carers”.
Families took time out to participate in the activities, which included an army-style assault course, loose parts play, a (very steep!) mud slide, face painting, messy play and sand.
Children were evidently relishing the mud slide, which was improvised though the children’s own ideas, using cardboard boxes as makeshift sledges to descend down the steep bank.
The garden staff have been supportive of on-going events in the park – Ian Griffiths, Gardener, said “it is one of the best events in the park – the children and their parents get so much out of it”.
Jennifer and the Play Ranger Team from Aberdeen Play Forum regularly run sessions in different parks and gardens in Aberdeen, which can be found through their Facebook page.
Great fun in a wonderful location!
