An exciting new CPD (level 8) award is now available to help communities and organisations plan for better play opportunities. The award is aimed at professional people in organisations whose strategic thinking and decision making can make a big difference to the range and quality of play in the community, but whose day job may seem to have nothing to do with play at all!! This could include those involved in planning and design, health and education, forestry, sports, youth, transport and housing.
The Professional Development Award in Strategic Planning for Play is available from Play Scotland and is closely linked to the Scottish Government National Play Strategy and Action Plan. There are four modules: Play and Play Spaces; Play, policy and community; Evaluating and analysing the impact of play on children and young people; Evaluating Play Sufficiency.
If you think back to your favourite places to play when you were young you will agree that children today have less freedom and opportunities to have the fun and excitement we enjoyed. This is a fantastic way of addressing this imbalance and improving the health and wellbeing of our young people.
This Award is unique in the UK and a result of collaboration between Play Scotland and partners in SQA, Inspiring Scotland, SkillsActive and the Scottish Government. It will help deliver the vision to make Scotland a nation which values play as a life-enhancing daily experience for all our children and young people; in their homes, nurseries, schools and communities.
“Play is hugely important to a child’s development and key to their physical, cognitive and social development, and shouldn’t just be left to parents. The development of this new qualification, the first of its kind in the UK, is a milestone for the sector and can only help to improve standards among professionals, in keeping with the aims of our Play strategy.”
Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People
